The Azerbaijan national team match against the Sweden in Matchday 9 of the EURO 2024 Qualifiers on Thursday, November 16, 2023 will be held at the Tofiq Bəhramov adına Respublika stadionu Stadium, Baku.
Azerbaijan’s hosting of Sweden will not affect the position of the two teams in Group F of EURO 2024 Qualification because they have certainly failed to qualify for the final round.
Belgium and Austria have locked in two automatic tickets from Group F to the EURO 2024 final in Germany with 17 and 16 points. Sweden is in third place with seven points, while Azerbaijan is in fourth place with four points. Estonia occupies the bottom position with three points.
Even though there is nothing at stake, both teams certainly don’t want to end the qualifying round with a defeat. Azerbaijan will try to improve their poor record at home, while Sweden will try to maintain their positive performance away from home.
Azerbaijan is in poor form at home. Of the last four matches at home, they have only won one, drawn one and lost two. Azerbaijan’s only win at home came in September 2023 when they beat Estonia 1-0 in the EURO 2024 Qualifiers. Azerbaijan’s sole goal was scored by Mahir Emreli.
Azerbaijan’s only draw at home came in June 2023 when they played Estonia 1-1 in the EURO 2024 Qualifiers. Azerbaijan’s goal was scored by Emin Mahmudov, while Estonia’s goal was scored by Henri Anier.
Sweden, on the other hand, is in pretty good form away from home. Of the last four matches away from home, they won two, drew one and lost one. Sweden’s first win away from home came in November 2022 when they beat Moldova 3-1 in a friendly match.
Sweden has an excellent meeting record with Azerbaijan. Of the three previous matches, Sweden won all with a goal difference of at least two. The first meeting between the two teams took place in October 1999 in the EURO 2000 Qualifiers. Sweden won 3-1 at home to Azerbaijan thanks to goals from Henrik Larsson, Fredrik Ljungberg and Andreas Andersson. Azerbaijan’s reply goal was scored by Nazim Aliyev.
Even though there is nothing at stake, both teams certainly don’t want to end the qualifying round with a defeat. However, Sweden is considered to have more advantages in terms of meeting record, performance and player quality compared to Azerbaijan.
