Panama and Mexico are two national teams that compete in North, Central America and the Caribbean. They not only faced off in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but also in the final round of the Concacaf Nations League, a prestigious event similar to the UEFA Nations League in Europe.
In FIFA World Cup qualifying, Panama and Mexico will meet at the Estadio Rommel Fernández on Wednesday, in their last game before the end of the international break. The home team are in second place in the standings with four points from two matches, while the visitors lead with six points.
Panama earned a 3-0 thrashing of Jamaica in their previous game, thanks to goals from Andrés Andrade, Rolando Blackburn and Cecilio Waterman. Meanwhile, Mexico earned a narrow 1-0 win over Costa Rica, thanks to an Orbelín Pineda penalty.
Panama couldn’t get off to a perfect start to qualifying, as they only played out a goalless draw against Costa Rica last Friday. However, they quickly got up and won a convincing victory at home to Jamaica in the next game.
Mexico is unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions, with eight wins and two draws. They also really dominated the meeting between these two teams, winning 22 of the previous 38 matches. Panama can only win five wins, while 11 matches ended in a draw.
In the Concacaf Nations League, Panama and Mexico will face off in the third place match in June next year. This is the second season of the event and currently the United States team is the defending champion.
Panama reached the finals undefeated (won 3, drew 1) and conceded no goals in the group stage. However, in the semifinals when faced with Canada who was much stronger, Panama had to admit the opponent’s advantage.
Mexico is a strong team in this region, but they failed to win in two editions of the Concacaf Nations League. They also only finished runners-up in the 2021 Gold Cup (a Concacaf championship similar to the Euros in Europe), losing again to the United States. Therefore, they have to improve their image by defeating Panama.
Coach Diego Cocca (who has only been in office since February 2023) also has to prove himself by achieving this positive result, because the Mexican public will definitely not give him mercy if his team loses again to Panama, an opponent who has always been under their shadow.
