Synopsis
In 1937, Beiping and Tianjin were occupied by the invaders. In order to protect students and faculty, a number of universities in the Northern region decided to relocate to the South. After arriving in Changsa, several universities tried to keep teaching and learning activities, but the war also touched their territory.
Meng Hai Tang (Zhang Ruo Nan), a lecturer from the National Peking University School of Medicine, then escorts her students to Chongqing. In order to preserve their national heritage, a group of Chinese intellectuals came to form the National Southwest Association University ‘Lianda’ while in exile.
Zhang Qi (Hu Yi Tian) is one of the intellectual colleagues who also goes to Chongqing. In exile Meng Hai Tang and Zhang Qi worked hand in hand to establish a medical school under Peking University, so that the seeds of love grew in their hearts after going through various frictions.
After Hai Tang was dismissed from her position, the couple traveled to the West to Kunming and married, and also rebuilt the medical school in Mengzi. During the battles in North Burma and West Yunnan, Hai Tang and Zhang Qi led the students to provide medical assistance with zeal without fear.
During a battle, Zhang Qi was captured by the Japanese and has since disappeared without a trace. Hai Tang, who was pregnant at the time, had a miscarriage.
Although his whereabouts are unknown, for years Hai Tang has remained faithfully awaiting Zhang Qi’s return. Finally the couple reunited after thirty years had passed.
