Peru is 23rd in the FIFA world ranking. Of the several South American teams that have already qualified for the 2022 World Cup, Peru is not one of them.
Even though at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Peru was still in action showing its magic. Unfortunately for the Qatar World Cup, Peru lost 5-4 to Australia via a penalty shootout in the inter-confederation playoff.
As a result of the defeat, the coach of the Peruvian national team, Ricardo Gareca, announced his retirement from the post of head coach. The Peruvian football federation then appointed Juan Reynoso as the new coach in August.
Under Reynoso, Peru lost 1-0 to Mexico in a friendly last September. But before that Peru won 4-1 over El Salvador through goals scored by Gianluca Lapadula, Bryan Reyna and Christian Cueva.
While the visiting team, Bolivia sits at number 59 in the world rankings. Just like Peru, Bolivia failed to play at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The disappointing results in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying saw the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) change their manager the following summer. Bolivia only finished ninth out of 10 South American countries.
The two teams last dueled in the South American zone World Cup Qualification on November 12, 2021. At that time, Peru won 3-0 over Bolivia through goals scored by Lapadula, Cueva and Pena.
