Real Sociedad will host Inter Milan at Anoeta on Wednesday (20/9) in the first group D match of the 2023-24 Champions League. This was the third meeting in Europe between the two teams, with each team winning once. In the 1979-80 season, Inter won 3-0 in the first meeting before Sociedad responded with a 2-0 win in the second meeting.
Real Sociedad managed to win tickets to the Champions League group stages this season after finishing in fourth place in La Liga last season. They also impressed in the Europa League group stages last season, topping the standings with 15 points after winning five times and losing just once to Man United. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 after losing 0-2 on aggregate to AS Roma.
Real Sociedad have not yet found their best rhythm in the 2023/24 season. They just suffered a 1-2 defeat to Real Madrid last weekend, after taking an early lead. They only won once, drew three and lost one of their five matches in La Liga. They are in 11th place in the standings and still have to work hard to improve this less consistent performance.
Meanwhile, Inter advanced to the Champions League final for the first time since 2010 but had to concede Man City’s lead with a score of 0-1 last season. This season is the sixth time in a row they have appeared in the Champions League group stages and Inter are also favorites in a group containing Salzburg and Benfica.
Inter Milan started this season brilliantly and have won four of their first four matches in Serie A. Their first two matches ended with a score of 2-0 while their last two matches were landslide wins with a score of 4-0 and 5-1 over Fiorentina and AC Milan. Overall, the club from the city of Milan are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions (won eight, drew once).
Despite losing Romelu Lukaku, Andre Onana, Edin Dzeko and Marcelo Brozovic, Inter have shown their strength by having a large selection of quality players such as Lautaro Martinez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Yann Sommer and Marcus Thuram.
Even though it is quite tight, it is estimated that Inter’s performance background will still give them a greater chance of winning than Real Sociedad. The Spanish representatives themselves must increase their effectiveness in front of goal, take advantage of the situation of playing at home, and tighten their defense if they don’t want to lose to the visiting team.
