Indonesia will host Turkmenistan in an international friendly FIFA Matchday match at the Bung Karno Stadium on Friday, 8 September 2023. This match is part of Indonesia’s preparations to face Brunei in the play-off round of the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup qualification. Indonesia hopes to provide victory for his loyal supporters.
However, Indonesia also faced several obstacles in their preparations. Coach Shin Tae-yong could not call several players such as Marselino Ferdinan, Elkan Baggott, Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner and Pratama Arhan because they were defending the Indonesian U23 team in the Asian Cup U23 qualifying round.
Shin Tae-yong also had to rely on several new players such as Wahyu Prasetyo, Ryan Kurnia and Aji Kusuma. They will be joined by five players who have played abroad namely Jordi Amat, Asnawi Mangkualam, Shayne Pattynama, Saddil Ramdani and Sandy Walsh. They are expected to provide experience and quality for the Indonesian team.
Shin Tae-yong himself could not attend in person to train his team because he was busy with the Indonesian U23 team. He can only monitor team training via video. He will hand over responsibility to his assistants to lead the team on the pitch.
Meanwhile, Turkmenistan also brought 23 players for two friendlies against Indonesia and Bahrain. Coach Mergen Orazov said that he did not select several talented young players because he wanted to give the Turkmenistan Olympic team a chance to compete in Asiad 19. However, Turkmenistan still has three players playing abroad namely Vepa Jumayev, Teymur Charyev and Ruslan Mingazov.
Turkmenistan is not a strong team in Asia. They are only 138th in the FIFA rankings and have not won since the start of 2023 (four games to three defeats and one draw). However, they can still pose a threat to Indonesia which is experiencing a player crisis.
Indonesia must be careful not to be caught out by Turkmenistan. They also have to take advantage of playing at home and have the support of the fans. This match is very important for Indonesia to increase their confidence and readiness to face bigger challenges.
Indonesia will most likely face Vietnam in the second qualifying round of the World Cup, as Indonesia only needs to beat weak Brunei in the play-offs. Apart from that, Indonesia and Vietnam will also meet in the final round of the 2023 Asian Cup (along with Japan and Iraq). Therefore, the match against Turkmenistan was a tough test for the Garuda team.
