Lens will host Rennes at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Sunday (20/8) evening in the second round of the 2023/24 Ligue 1. The two teams had different starts at the start of this season. Rennes are top of the standings after thrashing Metz 5-1, while Lens suffered a 2-3 defeat to Brest.
Lens actually had a two-goal lead in that match, but they failed to maintain their advantage and had to accept defeat after Thomasson received a red card in the 82nd minute. This was the second consecutive defeat for Lens after previously losing to PSG in the French Super Cup.
Rennes, on the other hand, impressed by scoring five goals against Metz. Forward Amine Gouiri was the star with two goals and one assist. Rennes has also shown consistent performance by only losing once in the last five matches in all competitions.
In the last meeting between the two teams, Lens managed to hold Rennes 1-1 at home in January. However, on a head to head basis, Lens is still ahead by never losing to Rennes in the last six matches (three wins and three draws).
Lens will be missing several important players for this match, such as El Anynaoui and Thomasson who were suspended, as well as Poreba, Cabot, Farinez and Said who were injured. Rennes was also unable to field the injured Terrier and Truffert.
In this fight, Lens will try to bounce back from their defeat and take advantage of the support from their own supporters. However, Rennes have a lot of confidence and more quality up front.
