Barcelona will host Cadiz at the Olímpic Lluís Companys stadium on Sunday (20/8), in the second round match of La Liga 2023/24. This is the first challenge for coach Xavi’s side in their new home, after the Camp Nou stadium is being renovated.
Barcelona are hoping for a first win in La Liga this season, having only drawn 0-0 against Getafe in the first round. This result left them behind their two main competitors, Real Madrid and Atletico, who both won their opening games.
Cadiz didn’t have a great start either, as they lost 0-2 to Sevilla at home. They will try to trouble Barcelona, as they have done in the last few seasons. Last season, they managed to draw against Barca 1-1 at Camp Nou, and before that they even won 2-1 there.
Barca will not be strengthened by coaches Xavi and Raphinha due to suspension. Meanwhile, new defender Inigor Martinez has not registered, and Araujo is injured. This made the Blaugrana’s back line fragile, and they had to be careful with Cadiz’ counterattacks.
On the other hand, Cadiz is also missing Escalante through suspension and trio Ocamp, Chust and Guardiola through injury. They will rely on their pace and toughness to keep up with Barca, who have the advantage of class and squad depth.
So Barcelona will likely use a 4-3-3 formation, with Lewandowski as the spearhead of their attack. The Polish forward was La Liga’s top scorer last season, and he will be looking to open his account this season.
Meanwhile, Cadiz is likely to use a 4-4-2 formation, with two fast attackers up front. They will play defensively and look for opportunities to counterattack down the flanks.
