Strasbourg and Lyon will face each other in the opening match of Ligue 1 2023/24 which will be held at the Stade de la Meinau on Sunday (13/8). It will be an interesting match, as both teams have new coaches looking to prove themselves in France’s top flight.
Patrick Vieira, a former Arsenal and France captain, was appointed as Strasbourg coach in June. He replaced Thierry Laurey, who led the team for five seasons. Vieira previously coached New York City FC in MLS and Crystal Palace in the Premier League, but did not achieve satisfactory results. Now, he hopes to take Strasbourg to a higher level.
On the other hand, Laurent Blanc returns to coaching after a six-year absence. The 57-year-old coach took over Lyon from Rudi Garcia, who decided to leave after failing to guide the team to qualify for the Champions League. Blanc has experience coaching Bordeaux, the French national team and Paris Saint-Germain, where he won 11 titles in three seasons. However, he has also come under fire for failing to compete in Europe.
These two coaches certainly want to start the new season with a win. However, they also face challenges of their own. Vieira has to face opponents who always make it difficult for Strasbourg. In 40 meetings in all competitions, Strasbourg only won six times, drew seven times and lost up to 27 times. Even when playing at home in La Meinau, they also lost badly with four wins, four draws and 12 defeats.
Meanwhile, Blanc must improve Lyon’s performance which was very disappointing in the pre-season. Lyon has only won one of five matches and is currently on a streak of four consecutive defeats. Even worse, in the last four matches, Lyon could not score a single goal. Blanc also had to deal with the team’s internal problems, as several star players such as Castello Lukeba and Karl Toko Ekambi reportedly wanted to leave.
Even so, both teams also have positive aspects that they can count on. Strasbourg put in an impressive performance in preparation for the new season. They have played seven trial matches and only lost once, while the rest won three and drew three. By testing different players and strategies, Vieira seems to have found a tactic that works for his team.
Reflecting on the latest performance information, Lyon also has a better team strength than Strasbourg. They have many quality and experienced players on all fronts, such as Alexandre Lacazette, Amin Sarr and Rayan Cherki. They also still have goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, although he is unlikely to be fit for the opener.
