After successfully ending last season in fourth place, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to welcome the 2022-2023 Premier League by hosting Southampton in the inaugural week. The match, which will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 August 2022, kick-off at 15:00 BST.

This season Spurs will face a busy schedule with the success of winning a ticket in the UEFA Champions League. In preparation, Antonio Conte brought in physical coach Gian Piero Ventrone, who won titles with Juventus and Guangzhou Evergrande.

The physical trainer who is known for his methods of pushing players beyond this limit is also reported to have made a number of Spurs players vomit during training. In contrast to Spurs who became the ‘dark horse’ last season, Southampton had to settle for ending the season in 15th position with only five points advantage over Burnley who were on the verge of the relegation zone. From 38 matches, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad managed only nine wins and 16 defeats.

In five pre-season games, Southampton have only managed to bag one win (2 draws, 2 defeats), against French club AS Monaco (3-1). Meanwhile, Tottenham only lost once in four friendlies before starting the new season (2 wins, 1 draw).

Interestingly, last season Tottenham failed to bring in all three points in two games against Southampton – drawing 1-1 in the first meeting and losing 2-3 in the next meeting. But this time Conte’s side are believed to be fighting as hard as they can to take full points before meeting Chelsea in next week’s London Derby.
