Levante is unbeaten in the last 17 competitive matches since mid-October 2022, recording eleven wins and six draws. Among them managed to beat Olot 4-0, Andorra 2-1, and La Liga club Getafe 3-2 to reach the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.
In last season’s Copa del Rey, the club’s move, which was relegated to the Segunda Division last season, stopped in the second round after losing to Alcoyano on penalties. Even though in the 2020-2021 season Levante managed to reach the semi-finals before losing 3-2 on aggregate to Athletic Bilbao.
Before hosting Atletico Madrid, Javier Calleja’s side managed to secure third place in the Segunda Division standings by picking up 40 points in 23 matches. Even Levante has the opportunity to return to competing in La Liga if it is able to catch up to a three-point gap from the top of the standings occupied by Eibar.
On the contrary, after failing to win in the last two league matches, Atletico Madrid’s position has been increasingly pressured in the La Liga standings. Even though they are in fourth place, Los Colchoneros have the same number of points as Villarreal and Real Betis which are below them, and are only two points ahead of Rayo Vallecano who are in ninth place.
The only win out of three matches since the start of the year came against second division club Real Oviedo with two goals scored by Marcos Llorente and Pablo Barrios. This victory extended Atletico’s chances of being able to lift the trophy this season after his struggle in the Champions League ran aground.
Even though it is recorded as the fourth club that has collected the most Copa del Rey trophies, 10, Atletico have not managed to win this competition since the 2012-2013 season. Last season, Diego Simeone’s team was stopped in the round of 16 by losing 2-0 to Real Sociedad.
The problem is, apart from the lack of consistent performance, Atletico Madrid have not managed to beat Levante in the last four head-to-head meetings since consecutive wins in two meetings in 2020. In fact, Levante won two wins in that period, and ended the other two matches with results draw.
