Strasbourg has not managed to stop its nightmare this season by recording three successive defeats, including being knocked out of the Coupe de France competition after losing to Angers, a club that is at the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings, via penalty shootout.
Just one win in 17 matches has kept Strasbourg stuck in the relegation zone, in 19th place with four points difference to Ajaccio who is in 16th place.
According to historical records, 21 of the 23 teams that have only won once until mid-season will be relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the season. The problem is, the guest who will visit amid the critical conditions facing Le Racing is Lens, the second-place holder in the current standings.
If Strasbourg only managed to collect five points from nine home matches this season, then Lens has a contradictory record. Les Sang et Or have lost just two of their last 15 league visits – seven wins and six draws. Even in that period, Lens never conceded more than one goal.
Franck Haise’s team also managed to score a feat in itself by collecting 40 points in 17 Ligue 1 matches, the highest number of points in the history of the club. The solidity of Lens’ defense has been one of the keys to his success this season.
Among the 20 clubs competing in Ligue 1, Lens currently has the best record with the least number of goals conceded, 11, better than the standings leader PSG who have conceded 13 times.
However, the visitors must be wary of the head-to-head record which shows Strasbourg’s superiority in the last four league meetings with three wins and only one defeat. Strasbourg also managed to win with a clean sheet in the last two meetings against Lens, despite winning a narrow lead through one goal without reply.
