The arrival of Eric Roy brought fresh air for Brest to be able to survive in Ligue 1 next season. In his debut as coach, Roy managed to lead his team to a 2-0 victory over third division club Avranches in the last 32 of the Coupe de France.
It is not yet certain whether this victory can continue in domestic league matches. What is clear, this is the first win that Brest has made among the last three competitive matches – after consecutive defeats against Lyon (2-4) and Monaco (0-1).
These two defeats caused Les Pirates to be pushed to 17th place in the standings with a collection of 13 points, on par with Auxerre which is right below it and only two points ahead of Strasbourg who is in 19th place.
This means that there is no chance of losing again for Brest if you want to escape from the degradation trap. The problem is, the challenger in Week 18 will be Lille, a club that is aiming for a top five position in order to win a ticket to European competition next season.
After losing to Lyon at the end of October 2022, Lille has not failed to gain points in the last four league matches, although they have divided them into two wins and two draws. This visit to Stade Francis-Le Ble was also preceded by a 2-0 victory over Troyes in the last 32 of the Coupe de France.
Paulo Fonseca’s camp also looks quite tough in his visit. Three defeats from the last eight away matches were all experienced against clubs that are above them according to position in the Ligue 1 standings. The other five away matches ended with four wins and one draw.
What’s interesting is that Les Dogues’ achievements in this away match have not been successfully applied when they visited Brest. Lille had to admit the advantage of the home team in the last two visits since 2020. And Brest is still ahead with five wins, two defeats, among the last seven opportunities to host Lille in Ligue 1.
