RKC Waalwijk failed to close 2022 on a positive note after failing to win in three test matches during the World Cup break – one draw and two defeats. Joseph Oosting’s camp is also still having negative results with only one win and three defeats out of the last four league matches.
Despite this, Waalwijk currently sits in 10th place in the Eredivisie standings with 17 points in 14 matches, on par with NEC’s points tally but trailing in goal difference.
The joining of a number of former players from well-known clubs in the Netherlands has had a positive impact, especially in the productivity of goals this season, scoring a total of 25 goals in 14 matches. Unfortunately, Waalwijk’s defense still needs to be improved considering that 28 goals have managed to tear his net.
In contrast to Waalwijk, Heerenveen actually displayed a pretty solid defense by successfully ending six matches in a clean sheet between the first 14 weeks of this season. It’s just that Heerenveen is lagging behind in terms of productivity – it has only managed to rip its opponents’ nets 16 times.
De Superfriezen also recorded positive results with consecutive wins in the last two league matches before the World Cup break, 1-0 wins over Excelsior and 2-1 over Cambuur. An additional six points strengthened its position in eighth place in the standings, only one point behind Sparta Rotterdam and Ultrecht who respectively finished sixth and seventh.
Kees van Wonderen’s side are also unbeaten in their last four away games in the Eredivisie, collecting eight points in that period and winning streak in the last two visits before heading to the Mandemakers Stadion.
Coming on a positive note certainly boosted Heerenveen’s confidence when they challenged Waalwijk. What’s more, in terms of head-to-head record, Heerenveen are unbeaten in the last eight league meetings against Waalwijk since 2013, winning five and drawing three times.
