AS Monaco managed to record a victory in their inaugural match after the World Cup break through a 3-2 victory over Auxerre. 17-year-old striker Eliesse Ben Seghir’s late goal in the 85th minute ended the home team’s resistance at that time.
This victory is also a sweet memory for Ben Seghir who is recorded as the youngest player in the last 75 years to be able to score two goals during his debut in Ligue 1. So far only Thierry Henry has ever scored two goals for the club at a younger age than Ben Seghir.
As for Les Monegasques, an additional three points allowed him to pursue opportunities to qualify for a higher position. Until the 16th week, Monaco is in fifth place with 30 points, sandwiched between Rennes and Lille with only one point each, and only two points ahead of Lorient who are in seventh place.
In order to continue to fight for the top five positions, Philippe Clement’s side face a must-win game against Brest this New Year. This should not be difficult if you observe the head-to-head record, where Monaco have always won on the last three occasions against Brest at the Stade Louis II.
A failure to gain full points in the last 13 league games – three draws and eight defeats – has seen Brest fall into the relegation zone. Nevertheless, the opportunity to get out of this dangerous zone is relatively large considering that Brest is only two points behind Troyes and Ajaccio, who respectively occupy 14th and 15th places.
The problem is, interim coach Bruno Grougi seems to have failed to improve the team’s performance, especially in defense, only once managed to keep the net clean once in the last 13 matches. Of course this is a big problem when meeting Monaco, who have never failed to score in their last 14 home matches in Ligue 1.
Brest also have a particularly negative record on the road this season, winning just one out of six games – drawing one and losing four. If they fail to improve their performance until the end of the season, then Brest is in danger of being relegated for the first time since the 2012/2013 season.
