Atletico won 1-3 over Arenteiro in an away duel in the second round of the Copa del Rey (CDR) which was held on 23 December. Previously, Los Colchoneros had also defeated Almazan in the first round of the same tournament before the 2022 World Cup was held.
With this result, Atletico have won 3 consecutive wins in all competitions including a 2-4 win over Ponferradina in a friendly match during the international break. Atletico will face Real Oviedo in the CDR group stage on January 4.
Success in the Copa del Rey does not necessarily mean that the top clubs in the city of Madrid also reap the same results in the Spanish premier league, La Liga. The team is currently in points 5th position in the La Liga standings list with 24 points. Despite having the same points as Athletic Bilbao, Atletico lost on goal difference.
It took a hard struggle from the players and a new strategy from coach Diego Simeone to lift the team’s position up to the top four. Atletico’s current position is difficult to compete for the La Liga title, because they are 13 points adrift from Barcelona who lead the standings, and 11 points from Real Madrid.
On the other hand, Elche went through dark times in the first half of the La Liga season. Until the 14th week, Elche was only able to collect 4 points because they had never won, and only won 4 draws, the rest were defeats. As a result, Elche is stranded at the bottom of the standings.
Failing in La Liga, Elche was somewhat successful in the Copa del Rey. After defeating L’Alcora (0-3) and CD Guadalajara (0-3), the Los Franjiverdes team – nicknamed Elche CF – qualified for the group stage to face AD Ceuta on January 4.
Looking at the latest performance, it is very clear that Atletico’s strength is above Elche. It was almost difficult for Jorge Almirón’s men to pick up points from Atletico. Moreover, ATM is currently on a positive trend thanks to three consecutive wins.
