Brunei Darussalam is back in action in the AFF Cup after last appearing in 1996. This means that Brunei needs 26 years to return to competing in the AFF Cup which used to be sponsored by Suzuki Motor, and now the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
To play in the main competition for the 2022 AFF Cup, Tebuan – the nickname for the Brunei national team – has passed the qualifying round. In the last match, Mario Rivera Campesino’s troops won with an aggregate score of 3-6 over Timor Leste.
Now Brunei is ready to compete against Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia in group A of the 2022 AFF Cup. Their first opponent will be the defending champion, Thailand.
On the other hand, the Thai national team is the first seed in this year’s edition of the AFF Cup. With a collection of 6 AFF Cups, War Elephants are the team with the most records until the 2020 edition.
Under the tutelage of Alexandré Pölking, Thailand has the chance to maintain its status as the previous edition’s champion. Even without several players like Chanathip Songkrasin, the German-born coach still has Teerasil [Dangda], Theerathon [Bunmathan], Sarach [Yooyen], and Kritsada [Kaman].
In order to bring home the 2022 edition of the AFF Cup, Thailand has played trial matches with 2 other Asian teams. On December 11, Thailand won 6-0 over Myanmar, but on December 14, playing at Thammasat Stadium, the War Elephant team lost 0-1 to Chinese Taipei.
The two teams have faced each other several times. In the previous six matches, Thailand won 6 times, drew once. The last time Brunei and Thailand met was at the 1997 SEA Games, where the War Elephant won 6-0.
