Morocco’s entry into the top 8 of the 2022 World Cup has shocked all world football fans. In its history, Morocco has played 5 times in the World Cup, and in 1986 Atlas Lions became the first African team to advance to the knockout stages of the World Cup.
Being in the group of hell, Morocco performed brilliantly among other teams namely Croatia, Belgium and Canada. The Atlas Lions team even won Group F with 7 points, followed by Croatia who advanced to the knockout system. In the round of 16, Morocco managed to humiliate the 2010 World Cup champions, Spain via penalties which ended with a score of 3-0.
Withstanding the onslaught of Spanish players in a penalty shoot-out, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou became the hero of Morocco. Coach Walid Reragui will definitely rely on the Sevilla FC player when Morocco will face Portugal in the quarter-finals tonight. Morocco’s defense is very good, they are unbeaten in their previous four matches, conceding only 1 goal in the group stage.
On the other hand, Portugal advanced to the quarter-finals after beating Switzerland 6-1. Uniquely, Portugal won big with Cristiano Ronaldo who only sat on the bench. The former Manchester United player only entered in the 75th minute where Portugal had scored 6 times against Switzerland. CR7’s entry in the remaining 18 minutes of normal time did not bring any change to the team.
What’s interesting to note is that coach Fernando Santos’ decision to include Gonçalo Ramos as a starter to replace Ronaldo’s position actually brought blessings. The Benfica striker immediately scored a hat-trick at the age of 21, and was selected as the best player of the last 16 matches (Man of the Match). The remaining 3 goals were scored by Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leão.
Given Ronaldo’s declining performance, Santos had to concoct a new strategy for his team. Moreover, seeing Marako’s extraordinary performance that reached the quarter-finals. It is predicted that Reragugui will rely on three attackers namely Sofiane Boufal, Hakim Ziyech and Youssef En-Nesyri to attack Portugal’s defense.
With the emergence of a new hero for the Selecao, Gonçalo Ramos, will Ronaldo still be selected as a starter when Portugal face Morocco? Does Santos have the courage to return to reserve the 5 Ballon d’Or holder?
