Both countries failed to win in their opening matches in Group F of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, making this match crucial for both teams to get back to winning ways and maintain their hopes of continental glory.
Zambia were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match. King Kangwa opened the scoring for Zambia in the 23rd minute, but Yoane Wissa, the Brentford striker, equalized just four minutes later, forcing both teams to settle for a draw.
The team led by Avram Grant have now failed to win in their last three matches, including a 2-1 defeat to Niger in a World Cup qualifier in November.
On the other hand, Tanzania appeared to be overwhelmed by Morocco in their group opener, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Atlas Lions. Roman Saiss opened the scoring for Morocco in the 30th minute, before Azzedine Ounahi and Youssef En-Nesyri added two more goals in the second half to seal Morocco’s win.
The defeat marked the third defeat in a row for Tanzania, who have not been able to score since a 1-0 win over Niger on November 18.
Zambia has a fairly dominant head-to-head record over Tanzania. In the last 32 meetings between the two teams, Zambia has a better record with 18 wins, while Tanzania has only managed five wins. Nine other matches ended in draws. Zambia are unbeaten in their last five matches against Tanzania, picking up four wins and one draw since a 1-0 defeat in November 2007.
Although this will be the first meeting between Zambia and Tanzania at the Africa Cup of Nations, their last meeting was at the 2020 African Nations Championship, where Zambia earned a 2-0 win.
However, even though they have not achieved the desired results, Zambia will be proud of their tenacious performance in the draw against Congo. Meanwhile, Tanzania have lost their last three matches against Zambia. Thus, Zambia is expected to add three points to the African Cup of Nations Group F standings.
