The United States U20s performed very impressively at the 2023 U20 World Cup which was held in Argentina. They are one of only two teams (along with hosts Argentina) to win all game without conceding a goal.
This is a very lame match. The U20 United States is far superior to the U20 New Zealand. They have proved their worth in the group phase by winning three times without conceding. They also have a good record against New Zealand in the previous tournament.
After beating Ecuador who was the strongest team in group B, HLV Mikey Varas’ men had no trouble overcoming weak Fiji. In the last game, even though they had already confirmed qualification, the United States U20s continued to play it all out and won a landslide 2-0 win over Slovakia.
This is not the first time the United States U20s have advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Cup. In the last three editions, they have always reached the last eight. And this year, with the performances shown and the opponents to face, it is very likely that the U20 United States will repeat that feat.
Unlike the United States, U20 New Zealand only qualified for the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup as one of the four best third-placed teams. They don’t have enough competitiveness to compete in this round. In the opening match, they only narrowly won 1-0 over Guatemala, which was the weakest team.
Meanwhile, in the second match, they drew 2-2 with Uzbekistan after winning two goals and conceding in the final minutes. And in the third game, they lost 0-5 to Argentina, which is certain to qualify.
History is also not on New Zealand’s side. They have never gone further than the round of 16 in a World Cup. In 2017, they met the United States in this round and lost 0-6. Even in 2015, when they hosted, they also lost 0-4 to the United States in the group stage.
Of course every tournament has a different story because the players are different. However, it seems that there is no hope for New Zealand to beat the United States in the upcoming meeting due to the huge difference in quality. All they can do is try not to lose too much and score consolation goals.
The U20 United States will most likely win an easy win and can even score a lot of goals against the U20 New Zealand.
