Inter and Juventus will meet in the prestigious Derby d’Italia on Sunday night. Both teams qualified for the quarter-finals of European competition this week, but Inter are far ahead in Serie A after Juventus were sanctioned with a point deduction.
Inter are currently in second place with one point difference from Lazio, and two points from AC Milan, who follow behind. They are also 18 points behind Napoli who are firmly at the top of the standings. Even so, Simone Inzaghi’s troops are still ambitious to secure a ticket to the Champions League next season and maintain their dominance over their eternal rivals.
The Nerazzurri have won three of their last four meetings with Juventus in all competitions, including last season’s Scudetto title, last January’s Supercoppa Italia and last May’s Coppa Italia final. They will also face Juve again in the Coppa Italia semi-finals after the international break.
However, the Nerazzurri have not been at their best lately. They have won just one of their last five matches in Serie A, including a shock defeat to Spezia last week. They also had to settle for a goalless draw against Porto in the Champions League last Tuesday, despite managing to qualify for the quarter-finals 1-0 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, Juventus are in seventh place with a difference of seven points from Atalanta who are in sixth place. They still hope to get into the Champions League zone if their appeal against the 15-point sanction is granted by the sporting court.
Juve have also impressed in the Europa League this season. They just beat Freiburg 3-0 on aggregate in the round of 16 and will face Benfica in the quarter-finals. In Serie A, they have scored more goals than any other team since the winter break, losing only to Napoli.
La Vecchia Signora also has positive capital ahead of this match. They managed to beat Inter 2-0 in their first meeting of the season last November thanks to goals from Adrien Rabiot and Nicolò Fagioli. Massimiliano Allegri’s men have also not lost in their last five visits to the San Siro against Inter.
