The Paraguay national team match against the Colombia in 6e ronde of the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup Qualification on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 will be held at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco Stadium, Asunción.
A few days ago, two quick goals in the space of 4 minutes in the second half of the match by Luis Diaz, the Liverpool striker, helped Colombia achieve a dramatic victory over their strong guests, Brazil. This is the first time in 8 years that Colombia has beaten Brazil in an international match.
This victory once again proves that both in theory and practice, Colombia has the potential to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after missing the 2022 edition, especially considering that South America is allocated 6.5 places in the upcoming tournament. Since being appointed head coach in July 2022, Néstor Lorenzo has succeeded in making Colombia a major force in South America.
In 13 matches with Lorenzo, Colombia has never lost (won 8 times). In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Colombia still performed well even though they had to share points, including an unfortunate draw against Uruguay when they conceded the equalizing goal 2-2 in the 90+1 minute in conditions of playing with 10 men.
On the other hand, Paraguay benefits from an increase in the number of teams participating in the FIFA World Cup (from 32 to 48 in the upcoming edition), which means South America gets two additional places. It should be noted, Paraguay have failed in the last three World Cup qualifiers, with their best result being a seventh-place finish in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
This time, if Paraguay can repeat these results, at least they still have a chance to get a ticket through the inter-regional playoffs. After five matches, Paraguay seems to be on the right track with the five points they have collected and are in seventh position.
In fact, the Paraguay national team has only started to show improvement since they fired coach Schelotto and replaced him with another strategist who also came from Argentina, Daniel Garnero (who is quite familiar with Paraguayan football because he has coached several top Paraguayan clubs for almost a decade).
Under new leadership, Paraguay only narrowly lost to defending champions Argentina, beat Bolivia, and drew against hosts Chile despite having to play with 10 men for more than 50 minutes of the match. Even though they were playing at home, Paraguay realized that not losing to Colombia could already be considered a great success, considering that their opponents were considered superior. However, apart from much better performance, Colombia themselves have won 4 of their last 5 visits to Paraguay in World Cup qualifying. Therefore, even though one point is also considered a not bad result for Colombia, we can still hope for a win for the visitors. Choose Colombia.
