The Australia team will challenge the New Zealand team in a FIFA Matchday Friendly Match in Gtech Community Stadium Stadium, Brentford on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. For streaming coverage of Australia vs New Zealand, preview and how to watch it, see in this article.
The Australia vs New Zealand match will be an opportunity for both teams to prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers which will start next year.
Australia is the more experienced and accomplished team of the two teams, having participated in the last five editions of the World Cup. They have also moved to the Asian zone since 2006 to get a bigger challenge and a direct ticket to the finals. In the 2022 World Cup, they managed to qualify for the round of 16 before losing to champions Argentina with a score of 0-2.
New Zealand, on the other hand, has only appeared in two World Cups, namely in 1982 and 2010. They still play in the Oceania zone, which is considered the weakest zone in the world. They have to go through intercontinental play-offs to qualify for the World Cup, which they failed to do in 2014 and 2018.
In head-to-head encounters, Australia has a clear advantage over New Zealand. Of the 29 matches played, Australia won 19, drew seven and lost only three. They also scored 71 goals and conceded only 25 goals. In their last meeting in 2011, Australia won with a landslide score of 3-0.
Australia come into this match after losing to England 0-1 at Wembley last Friday. They performed quite well even though they had to face a strong team like England, but couldn’t create many dangerous opportunities. They also lost to Argentina and Mexico in their previous two friendlies.
On the other hand, New Zealand also played a goalless draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in Spain on Saturday. They managed to defend well against the physically superior African side, but also couldn’t show much threat in front of the opponent’s goal. They previously won over China and Bahrain in two other friendlies.
Regarding the team’s capabilities, Australian Coach Graham Arnold has several strong player options. Senior defender Aziz Behich may return to the starting lineup at left guard, while Lewis Miller may earn a spot on the opposite wing. Midfielder Massimo Luongo and forward Mitchell Duke are also likely to start.
New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley also has several player options. Bill Tuiloma will replace Niko Kirwan at the back while Matthew Garbett may return to midfield. Meanwhile, Alex Greive and Ben Waine may still have to sit on the bench.
Looking at all the factors above, Australia is expected to win easily over New Zealand on a neutral field at the Gtech Community stadium in London. They have much better quality and experience than their opponents, and also have high motivation to avenge England’s defeat. New Zealand may be able to put up fierce resistance at the start of the match, but will eventually be overwhelmed by Australia’s attacks.
