New Zealand and Congo will play another international friendly match for FIFA Matchday 2023. This match will take place at the Estadio Nueva Condomina, Murcia, Spain on Friday, October 13. This will be New Zealand’s first match since June, having not played during the last international break in September.
New Zealand have played three times in 2023, twice against China and once against Sweden. However, their match against Qatar was canceled following alleged racial abuse of Qatari players by New Zealand’s Michael Boxall. At that time, New Zealand was leading with a score of 1-0.
On the other hand, DR Congo have had a busy year with eight matches already played. Half of their matches were friendlies, while the other were 2023 AFCON qualifiers. Only two of these matches ended in defeat for the Leopards.
The two teams will meet for the first time. Congo have won six of their eight matches in 2023, losing two, including their last game on September 12.
After losing 1-0 to South Africa in their last match, Congo are at risk of losing two games in a row for the first time since a run of four consecutive defeats between March and September 2022.
Although New Zealand have some good attacking options that could make things difficult for their African rivals and are 40 places below Congo in the FIFA rankings, the Leopards are a much better team overall. Their performance this year has also been outstanding, so Congo has a chance of winning, although it may be slim.
