The Reims team will challenge the Lyon team in a Matchday 7 French Ligue 1 in Auguste-Delaune II Stadium, Reims on Sunday, October 01, 2023. For streaming coverage of Reims vs Lyon, preview and how to watch it, see in this article.
Reims is in fifth place in the standings with 10 points, only two points away from the Champions League zone. They appeared quite impressive by winning three, drawing one and losing once in the last five matches. The 2-1 victory over defending champions Lille the previous week was proof that Reims could compete with strong teams in France.
However, Reims also have to be wary because at home, they have been inconsistent with only two wins, two draws and four defeats in the last eight matches in Ligue 1. Reims will also lose two of their mainstay defenders, Maxime Busi and Joshua Wilson-Esbrand, who injury.
Losing Wilson-Esbrand will especially have a big impact on Reims’ back line, as the Englishman performed well in the first four games before suffering a corn injury.
Lyon, on the other hand, is under immense pressure after starting the season very badly. They have only won two points from six matches and are ranked second from bottom of the standings. If they don’t immediately improve the situation in the upcoming matches, the team that has won France seven times in a row will face many problems in the struggle to stay in the top flight.
Lyon have not tasted victory in Ligue 1 since beating Reims 3-0 at home to Groupama in the French league last season. However, it will be very difficult for Lyon to repeat this feat, especially when they have to travel to Reims, where they have lost four and drawn one in the last five meetings.
Lyon also cannot play striker Alexandre Lacazette due to suspension. Even though it’s not as great as last season, the experience and fighting spirit of this former Arsenal striker can help Lyon get out of the crisis. Apart from that, central defender Dejan Lovren is also absent due to injury. The player from Croatia suffered a serious thigh injury at the end of last season and will only be able to return after 5 October.
Lyon has just changed coaches by appointing Fabio Grosso to replace Peter Bosz who was fired. It is hoped that the Italian coach can bring positive changes to his team, but he also needs time to adapt to a new strategy, a new style. According to Bixente Lizarazu, a former Lyon player, a draw against Reims in this match could be considered a not bad result for Lyon at the moment.
