PSV Eindhoven will try to maintain their perfect record at the start of the Eredivisie season when they host FC Volendam at the Philips Stadium on Saturday (30/9) afternoon. The home team has made it six straight wins at the start of the 2023-24 league season, while visitors Volendam are yet to pick up their first win of the season heading into this weekend.
PSV extended their winning run in the Eredivisie to six games on Wednesday night with an easy 3-0 win over helpless GA Eagles at the Philips Stadium. Rene Hake’s side played extremely well to stay just one goal behind in the first half, but second-half goals from Luuk de Jong and Guus Til put the game completely under the home team’s control in Eindhoven.
Sitting at the top of the Eredivisie standings with a maximum of 18 points from their first six games, PSV are truly competing for the Dutch title this season, along with Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar. Peter Bosz is taking charge of the club for the first time since leaving Ligue 1 side Lyon in October 2022, and the 59-year-old is hoping to lead PSV to their first league title in six years.
During this summer’s transfer window, the Dutch giants have signed Armel Bella-Kotchap and Hirving Lozano joining from Southampton and Napoli respectively. The two new players have shown impressive performances at the back and front, and are expected to be able to contribute again when they face Volendam.
Meanwhile, Volendam remains with newly promoted Almere City as the two teams yet to win at the start of the 2023-24 season. Nonetheless, a first point of the season at Kras Stadium was a welcome one, with goals from Benaissa Benamar and Robert Muhren helping the home side come back from two goals down against John Lammers’ side.
Matthias Kohler has been promoted to head coach of the first team after being an assistant for the past two years, and the 32-year-old should use his limited experience in management to guide the club into the first tier. Having collected just one point from their first five games, Volendam are currently 17th in the Eredivisie standings, with only the previously mentioned Almere below the Kohler side in the early season standings.
The 2022-23 season is their first back at this level in over a decade, and finishing eight points ahead of 16th-placed Emmen is a huge achievement for the club. However, they will have to improve their performance if they are to avoid relegation this season, and facing PSV at the Philips Stadium will not be an easy task for the visitors.
Looking at the performance of both teams, PSV is a much stronger and experienced team than Volendam, and they have an excellent home record in the Eredivisie. The visitors will look to put up fierce resistance, but they will likely be overwhelmed by PSV’s sharp and efficient attack. PSV is expected to achieve a big win.
