Liverpool and West Ham will meet at Anfield on Sunday, September 24 2023, in the sixth match of the English Premier League. Both teams both achieved wins in their first matches in Europe’s second-tier competition, and will look to maintain their positive momentum.
Liverpool returned to the Europa League with a 3-1 win over Austrian club LASK on Thursday. This was the ‘Red Brigade’s’ first appearance in the competition since losing 3-1 to Sevilla in the 2016 final in Basel, in Jurgen Klopp’s first season in charge at Anfield.
Klopp made a complete change to his line-up compared to Saturday’s dramatic 3-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League. But they fell behind when Florian Flecker beat reserve goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from a corner in the 14th minute.
But the visitors came back after the break, equalizing 1-1 through a Darwin Nunez penalty in the 56th minute, after Philipp Ziereis fouled Luis Diaz. Liverpool forward Diaz scored a spectacular goal in the 63rd minute to give the visitors their first lead, after receiving a low pass from centre-back Ryan Gravenberch – who was making his first appearance after joining from Bayern Munich. Mohamed Salah came on as a substitute and ended the match with a goal in the 88th minute.
On the other hand, West Ham, champions of the European Conference League, were shocked when they conceded first at home to TSC Backa Topola from Serbia who were considered weak. Petar Stanic beat goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in a one-on-one situation.
However, Nemanja Petrovic’s own goal in the 66th minute paved the way for West Ham to turn things around. Mohammed Kudus, a new summer signing, scored with a header in the 70th minute on his debut for West Ham, and Tomas Soucek who came on for him also scored with a header in the 82nd minute to seal a 3-1 win.
The history of Liverpool and West Ham’s meetings is very long. They have met 140 times since 1923, with Liverpool leading with 76 wins, 38 draws and 26 defeats. Their last meeting was in February this year in the Premier League, when Liverpool won 2-0 at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Moh. Salah and Sadio Mane.
Liverpool vs West Ham is predicted to be a fierce and exciting match because it has quality players on the front lines.
