U23 China will face U23 India in the opening match of Group A of the 2023 Asian Games which will take place on Tuesday (19/9) in Hangzhou, China. This is a very important match for the hosts, who are under a lot of pressure from fans and the media after poor performances from their senior and U23 teams.

China’s U23s are bringing an unknown squad to the 2023 Asian Games with around a third of them having never played for any national team, from the youth team to the senior team. Some names that can be mentioned are Li Yongjia, Zhang Wei, Ablahan Haliq.

They have never worn the uniform of any national team, from U18, U23 to the Chinese senior team. Coach Li Tie probably wanted to give them the opportunity to show their abilities at this prestigious event.

Meanwhile, coach Igor Stimac of the Indian national team also tried hard to get permission from the clubs to call up their best players, but was unsuccessful because they were playing in the domestic league.

Igor Stimac only brought 18 players to Hangzhou, including the living legend of Indian football Sunil Chhetri. He is India’s biggest hope to score goals and create a surprise in the 2023 Asian Games.

U23 China and U23 India have previously met in the 2024 U23 Asia qualifying round, where China narrowly won with a score of 2-1. China’s goals were scored by Fang Hao and Liu Zhurun, while India’s reply was scored by Sunil Chhetri. The match was quite fierce and both had opportunities to score more goals.

However, the recent performance of both teams is not very impressive. U23 China have only won once in their last five matches, namely against U23 Myanmar with a score of 3-0. Meanwhile, India U23s have lost three and drawn two in their last five matches. They also just lost to the UAE with a score of 4-0 in a friendly match before the 2023 Asian Games.

With home advantage, and under a lot of pressure, U23 China will definitely try to achieve a first win over U23 India, thus creating an advantage to win a ticket to qualify from group A.

However, they also have to be wary of the threat from Sunil Chhetri and company, who might play with great enthusiasm to make their country proud.
