Vietnam U23 is ready to face their first challenge at the 2023 Asian Games by meeting Mongolia U23 in the opening match of Group A. The team coached by coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn is determined to achieve victory, thereby opening up the opportunity to qualify for the next round.
Vietnam U23 prepared for this tournament in less than ideal conditions. Because they had to divide the players for the Vietnam U23s who took part in the 2024 Asian U23s, Vietnam U23s only had a little more than ten players to train at the start.
Only on September 13, after the matches at U23 Asia 2024 ended, coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn had a complete squad for training. This coach from Khanh Hoa also only has around 3 training sessions before leaving for China and 2 more sessions to prepare the formation before the first match against Mongolia.
Even though the preparation time was short, perhaps coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn was not too worried because most of the players had trained and played together in previous tournaments so they already knew each other. The coach’s task now is to find the best formation for the upcoming trip.
Unfortunately, Vietnam U23 cannot be strengthened by their two mainstay players, namely Hồ Văn Cường (injured) and Nguyễn Minh Quang (not included in the initial list). However, they still have many quality players such as goalkeeper Cao Văn Bình, defender Phan Tuấn Tài, midfielder Khuất Văn Khang, strikers Nguyễn Thanh Nhàn and Bùi Vĩ Hào.
Recently, Vietnamese football has achieved encouraging results in the region and continent. VFF is not targeting high achievements for Vietnam U23 in this tournament. However, coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn’s team still has hopes of entering the knockout rounds. A realistic target is one of the tickets for the best third-place team.
On the other hand, Mongolia U23 used a core team with players who had just played in U23 Asia 2024. There, U23 Mongolia managed to draw 1-1 with U23 Lebanon even though they had taken an early lead, lost 1-3 to U23 Saudi Arabia and lost 1 -2 of U23 Cambodia. In the current Mongolian U23 squad there are many interesting players such as: center back Filip Andersen, winger Dulguun Amaraa, midfielder Gerelt-Od Bat-Orgil, Tsogtbayar Batbayar.
Among them, Filip Andersen and Tsogtbayar Batbayar are two Mongolian players playing in Europe. Andersen plays for FC Slavia Karlovy Vary in the Czech CH League 3. However, the defender who was once called up to the Danish youth team will definitely not be able to play in the upcoming tournament because he was not included in the initial list.
By comparison of strength, current performance, Mongolia U23 is clearly a “fit” opponent for Vietnam U23. If you want to qualify as the best third ranked team, Vietnam U23 must win, even with a big score in the first match to gain an advantage from the goal difference. If they succeed in beating Mongolia, Vietnam U23 will have an easier time calculating the remaining 2 matches in the group stage.
