Toulouse will host PSG at the Stadium de Toulouse in the second week of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season. This is a game that is expected to be a good start for the two teams who have different ambitions in this competition.
Toulouse have just started a new era under Carles Martinez Novell, a former assistant to Philippe Montanier who left the club after last season. They managed to beat Nantes 2-1 in their Ligue 1 opener, despite falling behind to Mostafa Mohamed’s penalty. The equalizing goal was scored by Les Violets midway through the second half, before Rasmus Nicolaisen saved them in stoppage time with a late winner.
Toulouse also beat Nantes 5-1 in the Coupe de France final last season, picking up their first silverware. However, 13th place in the Ligue 1 standings was not enough to keep Montanier afloat, and Novell replaced him as head coach. Novell was previously appointed as Montanier’s assistant in December 2022, having only managed Kuwait’s U20 side.
On the other hand, PSG still has many problems to solve even though the new season has started. They still haven’t found a solution for Kylian Mbappe, their star who refused to extend his contract which expires in the summer of 2024.
Mbappe also refused to move this summer even though PSG had agreed a transfer fee with a club from Saudi Arabia. The 1998-born striker wants to leave for free, even being willing to sit on the bench or not play at all to achieve his goal.
PSG may be forced to release Mbappe on loan, in order to get money and reduce the player’s salary burden at the Parc des Princes. This might be a good choice for Mbappe, as he will be able to play on the pitch rather than being wasted in the capital city of Paris.
Meanwhile, PSG managed to sell Neymar to Al-Hilal for 80 million euros. However, a chaotic behind the scenes situation meant that the reigning Ligue 1 champions only managed a goalless draw with Lorient in their first game of the season. It was a match dominated by PSG with 78% possession and over 20 shots, but they failed to score a goal.
Despite winning Ligue 1 last season, his ninth title in the last 11 seasons, Christophe Galtier was sacked after just one season, and replaced by Luis Enrique. The Spaniard is facing a lot of difficulties, but he is expected to quickly get PSG back on track with the experience he has.
The Toulouse vs PSG prediction is heavily skewed towards the visitors, this is an opportunity for Luis Enrique and his team to get their first three points in Ligue 1 this season.
