Brentford and Tottenham will face each other in the opening match of the 2023/24 Premier League season on Sunday, 13 August 2023. This match will take place at the Gtech Community Stadium, home of Brentford. Both teams faced many problems before starting this new season.
Brentford, who were just promoted to the Premier League last season, are trying to show they deserve to play in English football’s top flight. However, they did not have a good preparation in the friendlies before the season. They have not won any of the five games they have played (draw three, lost two), and have failed to score in two of the last three.
One of the main factors influencing Brentford’s appearance is the absence of Ivan Toney, their mainstay striker who scored 31 goals in the Championship last season. Toney had to serve a suspension because of the red card he got in the last game last season against Bournemouth. In addition, Brentford must also lose goalkeeper David Raya, who is currently completing a transfer to Arsenal.
Tottenham also experienced a situation that was not much different. They just lost Harry Kane, their captain and best striker, who agreed to join Bayern Munich for 120 million euros. Kane was the Premier League’s top scorer last season with 23 goals. Losing Kane will certainly greatly affect Tottenham’s striking power on the front lines.
In addition, Tottenham also has several players who are injured or not fit. Bryan Gil (groin), Rodrigo Bentancur (knee), Ryan Sessegnon (thigh) and Fraser Forster (back) are all confirmed to miss this match. New coach Ange Postecoglou is also still looking for the best formula to form his team with a 4-2-3-1 formation.
If you look at the meeting record, Tottenham are still ahead of Brentford with three wins, two draws and one defeat in the last six matches between the two teams. However, if you only count the last three matches, Tottenham have never won against Brentford. Moreover, the last three matches at home to Brentford between the two teams have always ended in a draw.
