Marseille will host Reims at the Stade Vélodrome on Saturday, 12 August, in the opening game of the 2023-24 Ligue 1 season. This is the first game for new Marseille coach, Marcelino, who replaced the departed Igor Tudor. Marseille are favored for victory, but Reims will not give up easily.
Olympique de Marseille finished third in the final standings last season, and has the right to qualify for the Champions League qualifying round. With the support of its own supporters, Marseille hopes to take advantage of playing at home.
On the other hand, Reims is a team that cannot be underestimated. They finished last season in 11th place, and had a fairly stable run of form. They are also in excellent condition, with five consecutive wins in friendly matches. Reims showed that they can put up a fight against anyone.
Reims has several players who have the potential to threaten the Marseille defense, such as Boulaye Dia, Nathanaël Mbuku, Mathieu Cafaro and Arber Zeneli. They also strengthened their team by bringing in several new players, such as Mitchell van Bergen from Heerenveen, Thibault De Smet from Gent, and Amine Salama from Rennes.
Reims needs to improve their form away from home in domestic competition. They have lost four straight in their last away game last season. However, they also have a good record against Marseille. They have scored in their last four visits to Marseille.
