An interesting match will be presented tonight when Southampton, a team that has just been relegated from the Premier League, faces Sheffield Wednesday, a team that has just been promoted from League One, in a series of matches in the first week of the 2023/24 EFL Championship.
Southampton is superior to its opponent. They managed to retain many key players and even brought in quality players like Shea Charles from Man City. With new coach Russell Martin, Southampton promised to play offensive and attractive. Even though the trial results were not very satisfactory, Southampton can still be confident ahead of the new season.
Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, is another strong candidate for relegation. They lost coach Darren Moore, who has brought success to this team. Instead, they appointed Xisco Munoz, a coach with little experience in England.
With a limited budget, Sheff Weds could not strengthen the squad significantly. In several summer trial matches, they only won one victory over weak opponents.
Facing Southampton which is full of ambition and has many quality players, Sheff Weds will have many difficulties to gain points. They might be able to make a surprise but they will most likely lose at home.
The game, which will be officiated by one of the most experienced referees in England with 213 caps as a first referee in his career, Robert Madley, is expected to be goal-drenched.
Both teams have had a pretty good scoring performance in the last few matches. Southampton and Sheff Weds are also not too focused on defense so it is very likely that this game will have quite a lot of goals.
