At noon Wednesday ET, Crystal Palace will continue their preparations for the new season by taking on Crawley Town in their third pre-season friendly. The two teams will meet at the Broadfield Stadium, home of the League Two club.
Crystal Palace have not tasted victory since returning to action, having only drawn one and lost one of their previous two friendlies. Roy Hodgson’s side, recently re-appointed as permanent managers of his beloved club, will want to prepare before traveling to the United States and then face next month’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Sheffield United.
The Eagles’ have planned a packed pre-season program to get them ready for action on 12 August, and they have given a number of young players and returning internationals a chance. In Saturday’s game against Brondby, Palace went ahead twice thanks to goals from Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Jean-Philippe Mateta, but the Danes managed to equalize on two occasions and a hard-fought contest ended at 2-2.
Palace will increase their intensity when they host Championship side Watford before flying to the US, where they will play Millonarios and Sevilla. Finally, a game against Ligue 1 giants Lyon awaits as the Eagles return to Selhurst Park, ahead of a very important first day’s clash at Bramall Lane.
Meanwhile, Crawley Town have also had two chances so far this summer, and they kicked off their schedule by beating East Grinstead Town and Three Bridges Town, 2-0 and 2-1 respectively. Scott Lindsey’s team managed to dominate the game against two weaker local teams, and several new players and trialists have shown what they are capable of.
Crawley has less than three weeks to start their League Two adventure, with Bradford City coming to Broadfield Stadium on August 5. Crawley only narrowly avoided relegation to National League football last season winning two and drawing two of their last five games, so being competitive against a top flight side will boost optimism for a better season ahead.
Lindsey aims to give her entire squad a chance to show what they are capable of, but when Premier League opponents come to visit, she’s sure to field her best team. Crawley is unbeaten in the last eight home games, but won only three. They have also scored seven goals in their last five matches like Palace.
Even though they haven’t shown their best performance, Palace have a quality advantage over Crawley, and it is believed that they will easily control the game. With ambitions to break into the Premier League’s top 10, Palace will be looking to get off to a good start and pick up their first win of the summer.
