Twente and Sparta Rotterdam will face off again in the second leg of the playoff final to win a ticket to next season’s Europa Conference League. In the first leg, the two teams drew 1-1, so Twente only needed a goalless draw to qualify.
You may already know that the Dutch league is not like other European leagues which determine who is entitled to play in European competitions based on position in the standings. Here, there is a special playoff for teams in positions 5 to 8 to fight for the final ticket to Europe next season (to the Europa Conference League).
This round of playoffs was very stressful and exciting, as the teams had to play two semi-finals and a final in less than two weeks. This is a big challenge for them after a long and tiring season. This year, the two teams that made it to the playoff finals are Twente (5th position) and Sparta Rotterdam (6th position).
Twente qualified for the final easily and convincingly (winning 6-1 on aggregate) while Sparta Rotterdam had to struggle through penalties. But in the first leg of the playoff final a few days ago, Sparta almost took the lead before being leveled at 1-1 in the dying minutes.
This is the third match in a row between the two teams that ended in a draw, but that doesn’t diminish Twente’s quality. In fact, Twente is in very good form: winning 6 of the last 8 matches (the remaining 2 are draws).
More importantly, Twente are the only team in the Dutch league this season who have not lost at home (W 13 D 4) and they continued that trend in the playoff semifinals as they thrashed Heerenveen 4-0.
On the other hand, Sparta Rotterdam is the fifth best visiting team in the league this season (lost only 4 of 17 matches) and lost only 1 of the last 7 visits, including the playoff semi-final (2-1 win over Utrecht).
In the last three official meetings between the two teams, Sparta Rotterdam has never lost to Twente. With tickets to Europe still open for both teams, it is very difficult for Twente to win with a difference of two goals or more than Sparta Rotterdam.
