Match Preview

Sheffield United will put their promotion hopes on the line when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday. The two teams have not met in the FA Cup since the 1957-58 season, where the Blades won 3-0 in the fourth round over the Spurs.

After suffering back-to-back defeats against Middlesbrough and Millwall, Sheffield returned to winning ways on Saturday, picking up a 1-0 win over Watford. Ryan Porteous’s own goal in the second half was enough to separate the two sides in what was otherwise an uneventful match.

Despite their recent setback, Sheffield Utd still sits in second with a seven-point lead over third-placed Middlesbrough, who have played one game more.

Sheff Utd are one of seven non-Premier League teams still playing in the FA Cup this season. Given their healthy position in the race for automatic promotion to the second tier, Paul Heckingbottom’s men can take this game seriously as they aim to post their third quarter-final appearance in four years.

The Blades have progressed to this stage in the last two FA Cup campaigns (beating Reading in 2019-20 and Bristol City in 2020-21). However, they could face a challenge against Tottenham as they have been eliminated in their last five games against Premier League opponents at this stage.

Tottenham, who are currently fourth in the Premier League table, have beaten two lower league sides in the FA Cup this season. They narrowly lost to Portsmouth 1-0 in the third round before beating Preston North End 3-0 in the fourth round.

However, there is no guarantee that they will advance to the quarter-finals as they have been knocked out at this stage in the last three seasons, including a heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time loss to Championship side Middlesbrough last season.

Tottenham have gotten the better of Sheffield United in their Premier League meetings earlier this season, winning both of their last encounters, including a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane. If they win on Wednesday, it will be their first three-game win streak against the Blades since the mid-1970s.

Team News

Sheffield will have to make do without several key players when they face Tottenham in the upcoming game. Billy Sharp, Rhian Brewster, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Enda Stevens and Jack O’Connell are all out with various injuries, while George Baldock could potentially return to the matchday squad after participating in training.

Manchester City loanees James McAtee and Tommy Doyle are likely to be withdrawn to make their debuts in the lineup, but midfield trio Sander Berge, Oliver Norwood and John Fleck are likely to retain their places. Up front, Iliman Ndiaye and Oli McBurnie will lead the Blades attack.

On the other hand, the Spurs are without players such as Hugo Lloris, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Yves Bissouma due to long-term injuries. With the tight schedule of matches ahead, it is hoped that Antonio Conte will rotate the Spurs squad.

In attack, Son Heung-min and Arnaut Danjuma are both potential candidates to replace Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, with Harry Kane likely to continue as a centre-forward.

In conclusion, although Sheffield have lost just three of their last 20 home games, Tottenham (who have lost three of their last five away games) will be strong favorites to progress to the quarter-finals.
