Indonesia made it to the Asian Cup after finishing second in their third round qualifying group. A convincing 7-0 win over Nepal and Jordan’s win over Kuwait (3-0) allowed Indonesia to advance. This is the first appearance of the Indonesian national team in the Asian Cup since 2007.
On the other hand, the Mesopotamian, or Iraqi, Lions punched their ticket to this tournament by finishing group runners-up behind Iran in the second qualifying phase. Ahead of the important duel in the Asian Cup, Iraq played a test match against Indonesia in November 2023, and won with a score of 5-1.
According to the latest FIFA rankings, Indonesia is ranked 146th, making them the second-lowest seeded team in the Asian Cup, only behind Hong Kong (150th). Meanwhile, Iraq is in 63rd place in the FIFA rankings.

In terms of performance, Indonesia’s strength, which entered this competition with many naturalized players, still doesn’t look good. They have not won in five consecutive matches in all competitions. They have not beaten an Asian opponent since a 6-0 win over Brunei in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

As the second-highest seeded team in the group after Japan, Jesus Casas’ Iraq are expected to make it to the knockout stages of the tournament for the eighth consecutive occasion.
Last year, Jesus Casas guided the Iraqi national team to an impressive double, capturing the Arabian Cup in September and following that up with their first win in the King’s Cup.
The Asian Cup will be Casas’ first major continental tournament as head coach. He has previous coaching experience in major tournaments, acting as Luis Enrique’s assistant when Spain reached the semi-finals at Euro 2020.
