Rennes has a great opportunity to win a ticket to European competition as France’s representative in the last round of Ligue 1 2022/23. They are fifth, tied with Monaco (sixth) with 65 points, but far ahead on goal difference (+29 to +13).
Therefore, a win over Brest will ensure they at least maintain their current position (to play in the Europa Conference League), unless Monaco beat Toulouse by a minimum margin of 17 goals, a near improbable possibility.
In fact, Rennes could repeat last season’s feat (ranked fourth) if Lille, the team above them, stumbles upon Troyes. However, just barely getting into the “European group” for the fourth season in a row is enough to be proud of for the underdog Brittany.
This season, Rennes have not been very consistent, but they put in great form at the end of the season with three consecutive wins (including beating Monaco in the “Top 5 final”) and not even conceding a single goal while scoring a total of 11 goals/3 matches. Brest is also not a match for Rennes because in the last 10 meetings between the two teams, they have never won (lost 6).
However, as a small team, Brest is in good shape. Eric Roy’s team has lost only 1 of the last 10 matches in Ligue 1, won 6 wins and 3 draws, and now they are 11 points ahead of the bottom 4 teams. Especially at home to Francis-Le Ble, coach Eric Roy’s troops won five consecutive wins when they hosted guests. Thanks to that Brest has been safe from relegation.
Thanks to last weekend’s 2-1 win over Marseille, Brest enter the final round on a 3-match winning streak, having previously beaten Auxerre and Clermont before winning at the Stade Velodrome.
But because the opponent is on fire, and there are no signs of “early holiday” despite having reached the target (beating Marseille at home to the opponent in the previous round), Rennes is still the favorite for this match.
It should be noted that since the start of Ligue 1 2022/23, Brest has only received a big handicap once against PSG, the strongest team in the league and already champions (of course much better than Rennes in all respects).
