Moldova and the Faroe Islands will begin their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign by facing each other in Group E on Friday evening at the Stadionul Zimbru in Chisinau on Friday evening. These two teams have never qualified for a major tournament before, so they will surely fight it out for full points in their first game.
Moldova has just had a bad year in 2022. They failed to get promoted to Nations League C due to losing on goal difference and were also thrashed 5-0 by Romania in their last match. Their new coach, Serghei Clescenco, must immediately improve his team so they don’t keep losing. Moreover, they are in a pretty tough group with Poland and the Czech Republic as the favourites.
The Faroe Islands have a different story. They managed to advance to the Nations League C after winning their group unbeaten. They were even able to beat Turkey 2-1 at home thanks to goals from Viljormur Davidsen and Joan Simun Edmundsson.
Faroe Islands coach, Hakan Ericson, managed to change the mentality of his team to be more confident and brave. They also have several players who play in top European leagues such as Germany and Spain.
The Faroe Islands will hope to use their Nations League achievement as a springboard for even greater days to come. The tiny nation – with a population of around 50,000 – has never won more than two games so far in a European qualifying campaign it is believed could end this year.
As the host, Moldova certainly prepared well. There are several players who can be relied on, but the key player who will be the mainstay is Ion Nicolaescu. The 25-year-old forward has scored five goals for his national team, including the only goal for Moldova in a 1-1 draw with Israel in March 2021.
Meanwhile, the Faroe Islands also came with a number of preparations. Joan Simun Edmundsson will be a key player for Hakan Ericson. Having played in the Bundesliga, Ericson now plays for Belgian club Waasland-Beveren as a striker.
