History records that the Iranian U20s once dominated the Asian region by winning 4 consecutive championships in the 70s. However, since the tournament is held every two years, they have only managed to qualify for the Asian U20 World Cup quarter-finals five times and even in several tournaments they have not made it past the qualifying rounds. Of the four previous occasions, Iran’s U20s have only managed to qualify for the quarter-finals twice and have never won a title.
On the other hand, U20 Iraq is in second place in Group A after hosts Uzbekistan, although they are only ahead of U20 Indonesia who are ranked third in head-to-head.
