With the privilege of hosting the AFC U20 Asian Cup this year, Uzbekistan U20 have set high expectations for themselves. Whether they win the title or at least reach the semi-finals, that result is enough to secure their place at the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup 2023 in Indonesia in May.
Uzbekistan U20 have only reached the final once in their history following the AFC U20 Asian Cup in 2008, where they lost to UAE and finished runners-up, they have made it to the semifinals four times, meaning they have already qualified for the FIFA U20 World Cup each time they have made it that far.
In fact, during the last two FIFA U20 World Cups in 2013 and 2015, they even made it to the quarter-finals. Moreover, with the advantage of playing at home, Uzbekistan U20 is considered the strongest team in Group A of the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup, where they only faced a tough challenge from Iraq to secure two tickets to the quarter-finals (for the top two teams in each group).
Even though they qualify automatically as hosts, Uzbekistan U20 has asked to participate in the qualifying round to gain experience. They will still play with their best performance to face the IFA U20 World Cup 2023.
In their first match of the tournament, Uzbekistan U20 will face Syria U20, who won the one-off title in 1994. However, since 2004 (when they finished fourth overall and advanced from the group stage of the FIFA U20 World Cup), Syria U20 only made it past the group stage once, and they have failed to qualify for the AFC U20 Asian Cup in as many years.
This result partly reflects the decline in football in Syria, coupled with the country’s unstable situation, which makes it difficult for them to compete. In the previous qualifying round, Syria U20 placed second to Jordan, and they secured their place in Uzbekistan under fair play rules (i.e., they have a better game record than Thailand U20, who have the same points and goal difference as Syria U20).
With their form and home advantage, Uzbekistan U20 is clearly the favorite to win against Syria U20. It will be interesting to see if Uzbekistan U20 can maintain their good form and secure a win in the opening game of the 2023 U20 Asian Cup (AFC Cup).
