Fiorentina would make history as the first club to play in four UEFA club competition finals, after 30 years of waiting since losing to Serie A rivals Juventus in the 1990 UEFA Cup final.
Fiorentina came to the final with a capital of two consecutive wins, after being knocked out by Inter Milan in the Copa Italia final. In Serie A, La Viola only finished eighth and failed to qualify for European competition next season. Therefore, the Conference League title is the last chance for Vincenzo Italiano’s team to get a ticket to the Europa League next season.
Fiorentina have not won a European trophy since winning the UEFA Cup in 1961, while West Ham claimed the same four years later, beating 1860 Munich 2-0 at Wembley. Since then, neither club has managed to lift the UEFA cup.
West Ham is also having an unsatisfactory season in the domestic league and the Conference League title is the way out for David Moyes’ side to qualify for next season’s Europa League. In terms of quality, The Hammers are considered superior to opponents from Italy. If they play according to their abilities, West Ham could win the championship crown, and end the long wait since 1980.
However, La Viola prepared well for the Conference League final by picking up two straight wins over AS Roma and Sassuolo (3-1). In contrast, West Ham United closed the 2022/23 Premier League season with a 1-2 defeat to Leicester City.
The Hammers managed to stay in the Premier League with 40 points, in 14th place after the league ended. David Moyes and his boys may not have been as successful in the domestic league, but in the cup competitions, they have shown a different face.
West Ham are unbeaten since the round of 16, won 5 draws 1 to advance to the final. Just like Fiorentina, West Ham must win the Conference League to be able to play in Europe next season.
The latest news for the team ahead of the match, Fiorentina are only missing reserve keeper Salvatore Sirigu through injury, while Nicolas Gonzalez is likely to start, even though he hit the woodwork once when he scored La Viola’s last goal of the Serie A season.
At West Ham, two Czech international players namely Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal are ready to return to the first team. However, Gianluca Scamacca did not recover in time to play, so Michail Antonio will be the main striker.
