Match Preview
Man City is in their best form this season. They are just one win away from sealing the Premier League title after beating Everton 3-0 on Sunday. They are also unbeaten since early February and have won in their last 15 home matches. In the Champions League, they are also unbeaten at the Etihad Stadium since September 2018 and have won four times against Spanish opposition there, including a thrilling 4-3 H2H victory in last season’s semi-finals.
Real Madrid do not want to lose to their rivals. They managed to survive Man City’s attacks in the first leg and stay on course for the final thanks to Vinícius Júnior’s wonder goal. They also returned to second place in La Liga after beating Getafe 1-0 on Saturday with the most rotated team. Coach Carlo Ancelotti hopes to have the entire squad available for this match, including Ferland Mendy who has just recovered from injury. This will be Ancelotti’s 191st UCL match as coach, a record.
Both teams have attacks that are difficult to contain in the Champions League. Man City has a mainstay weapon up front, namely Erling Haaland, who is the top scorer in this competition with 12 goals, four of which were opening goals. Real Madrid pose the biggest threat from Júnior, who has scored seven goals in the competition, including the opening two. He is in third place in the list of top scorers for the 2022/2023 Champions League season.
The sharp battle between Kevin De Bruyne and Karim Benzema will be very interesting in tonight’s second leg. De Bruyne has scored in three of the last five H2H including the opener here last term, but Benzema could have gone one better by scoring in three of the last four, including twice in last season’s classic at this venue.
