The Thai national team will try to avenge their defeat to Malaysia in the first leg of the AFF Cup semifinals which took place at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on 7 January. Gajah War lost by a narrow score of 1-0 thanks to a single goal from a Malaysian player, Faisal Halim in the 11th minute.
There were a few incidents and protests from the Malaysian players and coach, Kim Pan-gon after the referee disallowed Malaysia’s second goal. The goal that was not approved by the referee came from a free kick which was put to good use by Dominic Tan in the 55th minute.
The referee assessed that the Harimau Malaya defender had committed a violation when there was a duel in the air with the Thai defender, Pansa Hemviboon. Hemviboon did finally receive medical treatment and it appeared that his head needed bandages.
Malaysia came to Thailand’s headquarters at the Thammasat Stadium, Bangkok with a 1-0 victory. Even though they have a narrow lead, this score is still not safe considering that Thailand will play in front of thousands of supporters which of course is an important capital for revenge.
Behind 1-0, the Thai national team coach, Alexandre Polking, had to concoct the best scheme so he could progress to the 2022 AFF Cup final against Vietnam, which had already won 1 ticket after winning 2-0 in the second leg over Indonesia with an aggregate score of 2-1.
This will be a fierce battle because Malaysia is a difficult team to beat. It was noted that 3 of the last 5 meetings between the two ended with the victory of the Harimau Malaya team, and 2 matches ended in a draw.
However, Thailand is the defending champion of the 2020 AFF Cup. In the last duel in September 2022 at the King’s Cup tournament, Malaysia and Thailand drew with a score of 1-1.
