To fill the gap for the 2022 World Cup which will enter the quarter-finals, Inter Milan and Red Bull Salzburg will play a warm-up game ahead of the return of the 2022-23 season in January. The two teams will heat up the squad without the players involved in the Qatar World Cup.
Inter need to be well prepared for the 2022-23 Scudeto race to resume, and to go even further in the Champions League. The reason is, until week 15 of the Italian Serie A, the Nerazzurri were stuck in 5th place on the latest Italian League standings list with 30 points.
Simone Inzaghi’s troops are quite far away, 11 points, from Napoli who top the standings, and only lost 3 points to city rivals, AC Milan who are in second place. Inter’s last match in Serie A, Italy was a 2-3 win over Atalanta on 13 November. Two goals were scored by Edin Džeko in the 36th and 56th minutes, and another goal was achieved thanks to a goal from an opposing player, José Luis Palomino in the 61st minute.
Focusing on the 27 players who have not competed in the World Cup, Inter’s squad is still filled with main players Milan Skriniar, Alessandro Bastoni and Edin Dzeko who were also in the team when Inter beat Gzira United 6-1 on Monday. Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku has not returned to the team even though Belgium has been eliminated in the last 16 of the World Cup, as well as Andre Onana who defends Cameroon, still on vacation. Meanwhile, Lautaro Martinez is still continuing at the World Cup because Argentina will play against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
While the Austrian Bundesliga champions, Red Bull Salzburg have more main players because they do not play in Qatar. Main striker Benjamin Sesko is in this week’s squad. But Croatia’s Luka Sucic and Swiss stars Philipp Kohn and Noah Okafor are unavailable, as Croatia qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals after beating South Korea.
In addition, coach Matthias Jaissle, who doesn’t have many options, will feature Maximilian Wober and Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko, because the Salzburg team has suffered quite a few injuries.
In the history of duel travel, the two teams have never played each other at any level of competition. Tonight’s friendly match will be the first. After this match, Inter will face Real Betis, Reggina 1914 and Sassuolo, before the official Serie A match against Napoli on 5 January 2023. Meanwhile, Salzburg will face Sturm in the quarter-finals of the Austrian Cup in February 2023.
