U20 Argentina is the superior team and has a big chance to beat U20 Nigeria and move on to the next round. Argentina are the hosts of the competition and will be bidding for the title for the seventh time, a record that has yet to be broken.
In the group stage, U20 Argentina showed their strength by winning all matches against U20 Uzbekistan, U20 Guatemala and U20 New Zealand. U20 Nigeria finished third in Group D with six points, tied with Italy, who finished second, and the Africans advanced to the knockout stage as best third-placed team in the group stage. They have twice won second place in this competition.
Although Nigeria’s U20 achievement in the group stage is more challenging than Argentina’s U20, it is clear that they will find it difficult to face opponents as strong as Argentina. The Nigerian U20s did manage to beat the Italian U20s 2-0, but that was not enough to scare away the Argentina U20s who have the advantage of playing at home and possessing skilled and talented players.
In the final of the 2005 edition of the U20 World Cup, Lionel Messi once scored two goals when the PSG player led his team to win 2-1. It was Nigeria’s second appearance in the final, with the previous having been in 1989.
Argentina also won the trophy in 2007, which was their sixth and last win in this competition. Therefore, the Argentina U20s are expected to be able to overcome the Nigerian U20 resistance and win a ticket to the next round.
