The USA U20 and Ecuador U20 national teams will start their inaugural match at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup when they meet in San Juan on Saturday (20 May). The United States and Ecuador are in a group with Slovakia and Fiji in Group B of the U20 World Cup.
The United States are making their 17th appearance at this level and qualifying for the tournament by winning the 2022 CONCACAF U20 Championship. The Stars and Whites have not played since a goalless draw against Serbia in a friendly in March.
Ecuador, meanwhile, is entering their fifth tournament and aiming to surpass their third feat of 2019. Miguel Bravo’s side completed their preparations by losing 1-0 to New Zealand in their last friendly. Ben Wallace’s goal in the 71st minute was the winner for the opposing team.

Match Preview
This will be the third tournament in a row where the two teams will face each other, with Ecuador winning one and drawing one. The two teams were paired in the quarter-finals of the 2019 U-20 World Cup, where Ecuador earned a 2-1 victory to finish third.
USA is winless in four games this year, losing three. Four of Ecuador’s last five matches have produced fewer than three goals. USA has reached the quarter-finals in the last three Under-20 World Cups.
The USA National Team has not been at their best in preparation for this tournament and will need to significantly improve their form if they are to progress to the next round.
Ecuador, meanwhile, had a surprise run to third place in Poland four years ago, but is unlikely to repeat that success story. The South Americans earned a 2-1 win over USA to secure their spot in the last four in Poland, so the latter will have grudges on their minds.
