The World Football Federation (FIFA) provided a total of US$440 million to reward teams in the 2022 World Cup from preparation, going into the group stage to the final.
The figure of $440 million US dollars is an increase of 40 million compared to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. While the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was only 358 million USD. However, the bonus amount as a prize is still very small compared to FIFA’s revenue in 2022 of $4.6 billion, of which $2.6 billion came from television rights.
The amount of prizes provided by FIFA is divided among the teams based on the performance achieved. In order, the winner of the 2022 World Cup will receive 42 million USD, then the runner-up team will receive 30 million USD, the third place 27 million USD and the fourth place 25 million USD.
Meanwhile, each team that advances to the quarter-finals will receive $17 million, while teams that make it to the round of 16 or knockout receive $13 million. Lastly, the 32 teams that only qualified for the group stage will each receive $9 million.
Prior to that, the 32 national teams will also receive 1.5 million USD from FIFA as aid to prepare to play in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Player Bonus in 2022 World Cup
In addition to team bonuses, FIFA also allows players participating in the World Cup to receive prize money. About how much money the player will receive will be the decision of each country’s team.
For example: Germany will give each of their players a bonus of almost $400,000 if they win the 2022 World Cup. The next bonuses are USD 250,000/person (runner-up), USD 200,000/person (third place), and USD 150,000/person (semi-finals), 100,000 USD/person (quarter-finals), and 50,000 USD/person for the top position.
The Australian Football Association is also ready to roll out a player bonus of around AU$290,000 to the players if they reach the knockout stages. Apart from that, players also receive bonuses from businesses and sponsors.
According to Athletic, the England team will also receive a prize if they win the 2022 World Cup. Coach Gareth Southgate himself will receive almost 5 million USD if he manages to lead the “Three Lions” to the World Cup, after 56 years of waiting.
