Argentina 2-0 Mexico Soccer Result: Messi Matches Maradona, Sets Another Record

Lionel Messi scored a goal in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Mexico in the second round of Group C of the 2022 World Cup. The goal led La Pulga to equal Diego Maradona’s achievements in the World Cup.

Messi scored and assisted his team-mates to help Argentina win 2-0 against Mexico. The Paris Saint-Germain star’s long-range shot found the net for Mexico.

Messi equals Maradona’s record

Messi’s goal took the 35-year-old superstar to 8 goals for Argentina in the World Cup, level with the legendary Diego Maradona, and only 2 goals behind Gabriel Batistuta who has scored 10 goals.

The only drawback of Messi from Diego Maradona is that he has not managed to lead Argentina to become the World Cup champion. Could the opportunity be in Qatar?

Before the match, coach Lionel Scaloni had indeed announced that the Argentine team would play this match so that Maradona could smile from above. Messi finally scored 2 personal milestones comparable to Maradona on the day the Argentine team commemorated the legend who died 2 years ago (25 November 2020).

Messi Sets New Record

Another record that was created from Mexico’s victory was Messi setting a record as the oldest player (35 years 155 days) to score and provide assists in a World Cup match.

Interestingly, the youngest player in tournament history to do this was also Messi (at 18 years 357 days) when Argentina played Serbia in the 2006 World Cup.

Messi and Enzo Fernandez Gol goals

Messi’s super goal in the match against Mexico was created in the 67th minute, when Argentina was deadlocked. With a genius right footing, Messi put the ball past the three Mexican players who were blocking in front of him.

The ball is not strong but very dangerous. Despite trying his best, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was unable to stop the opponent from opening the scoring. In the 87th minute, Messi passed the ball to Enzo Fernandez for an equally beautiful goal, sealing a 2-0 win for Argentina.

The third round of the group C stage will be the deciding event for Argentina, whether they can qualify for the knockout phase. Currently Argentina is second in Group C standings with 3 points, ahead of Saudi Arabia (3 points) and Mexico (0 points).

Argentina will challenge the leaders of C standings, Poland on Thursday, December 1, 2022. Victory is a fixed price so that La Albiceleste can swing into the round of 16.
