Juventus is facing a major crisis after being involved in a financial and accounting scandal related to player transfers. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) accuses Juventus of cheating and falsifying documents. As a result, Juve had to lose 15 points in Serie A.
Former president Andrea Agnelli, former sporting director Fabio Paratici, executive director Maurizio Comeabene and former vice-president Pavel Nedved were also banned from working in Italian football.
Although the sentence was suspended by a court under the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), the FIGC appeals court later decided to deduct 10 points from Juventus for raising fake capital through transfer activity.
With this decision, Juventus fell from second to seventh place in the Serie A standings. This is a ranking that does not give them a place in the European Cup, let alone the Champions League. Juventus will appeal again but the chances of success are not high.
The 10-point deduction penalty has affected the mentality of the Juventus players. In the last match, they lost 1-4 to Empoli, a team that is in the bottom half of the standings. This was the 12th defeat to the Turin side in Serie A this season, the most in the last 12 years. Thus coach Max Allegri could not help Juventus win the title in two consecutive seasons.
Meanwhile, AC Milan is also struggling to enter the top four in Serie A to qualify for the Champions League. The Rossoneri had led the Serie A standings in the first half of this season, but then slumped and had to surrender the Scudetto to Napoli.
Milan is now in fourth place with 64 points, three ahead of Atalanta in fifth. Milan need to win in their remaining two matches against Juventus and Udisse to confirm their place in the Champions League.
Milan have a good record against Juventus recently, unbeaten in their last four Serie A matches. The Rossoneri lead on aggregate goals 6-1 during their unbeaten period. Milan also won 2-0 in the first meeting this season at the San Siro. The Rossoneri are now aiming to beat Juventus in both rounds for the third time in the last 50 years, and for the first time since 2010.
The match between Juventus and Milan will be a fierce and tense one. Juventus and Milan are aiming for a place in next season’s Champions League, but there is only one place left in the top four. Who will come out victorious?
